The inspiration for this painting comes from various sources. One in particular would be my middle son Maxwell. He has had a great influence on Scott and myself over the past 6 months, as passionate young adults often do. In his search for what to do with his life, one thing has remained constant, his caring for the environment. After many discussions and soul searching he has decided to head out to Northern California to a remote farm and learn first hand how to live self sufficiently, treading very lightly on the earth. He hopes to take what he learns there and create his own homestead someday. We are really going to miss him.
This painting is 20x24 painted on a cradled birch wood panel. The sides are painted to match.

Botanical Still Life-Original painting by Catherine Nolin

I spent Sunday working on this painting and was able to finish it today.  I felt very guilty in my studio all day yesterday while my husband raked the yard and then went on a hike alone. .  It was 60 degrees you know.  As I painted I kept thinking about the snow and cold and how hard it makes everything.  I thought about my mother who won’t be able to go out much once winter really sets in.  I guess that’s why I felt compelled to paint  a bouquet of flowers.

This piece  is 8x10 painted with acrylics on stretched canvas.  The sides have been painted so no frame is needed.  Wired and ready to hang.

Zebras and Vases

The weather is looking good on Saturday for Art in The Park in South Portland Maine.      As you can see, I have been in my groove.  I must say that I enjoyed painting this piece very much.  In keeping with my more relaxed, abstract, painterly approach (thank you Henri) It’s all about the colors and the movement.  This painting is 16x20 painted on canvas.  For sale in my Etsy shop or some see it in person in South Portland Saturday. 

Growing Pains

I decided to go in a more whimsical direction with this latest painting.     I wanted to bring together my love of interiors, textiles and nature (I know very Matisse like .)  You can make up your own story as you look at this seated woman.  She ended up looking a lot like my third oldest sister Susan in a way.  This was not my intent but it works for many reasons.

Ode to Pablo

I decided to work with some more primary colors. I have had a long time love/ hate relationship with red. This painting is 11x14 and will be coming with me Saturday to the exhibit in New York.

Obviously, big fan of Picasso. This piece is somewhat of a self portrait. I enjoyed creating all the fine detail involved here.

Two new contemporary paintings

Some of my customers have requested that i do a large scale painting of  a rug design that I use often in my room portrait paintings.  Here is my first one.  The photo doesn't really capture the essence of this piece.  You really have to see it to  appreciate it fully.  It is rather large for me 22x28 on gallery wrapped stretched canvas.  I have painted the sides so framing isn't required.  no staples showing.  $149.00

The Boys Of Willowbrea

This contemporary 24 x 36 abstract painting could be from a Soho gallery but actually was created by a group of special young men. I was asked quite a while ago to help decorate the walls of the residential house my son with autism lives in. I thought it would be great experience for the students, that lived at the house, to be the creators of the art work they would be seeing every day.
This is the first piece in a series of four paintings for the living area. I wasn't sure what to expect. Each student chose a color and had a different way of applying the paint. This was the gorgeous result. I enjoyed working with them so much. I can't wait to go back to watch them create the next work of art. I am not a huge fan of contemporary paintings but I am now. I am honored to have this opportunity.

Words You Cannot Utter

One of the hardest things in life is having words in your heart that you cannot utter. I forget where I read this but I know James Earl Jones said it.
Today I decided to do a little experimenting. This just sort of came out.
This is done with acrylic paints on a 16x20 stretched canvas. The sides have been painted navy blue and doesn't require a frame.
