Being With Sam.

It's that time of year when my son Sam comes home for the day every day for seven days.  I wish he could stay over night too but he only sleeps an average of 4 to 6 hours  and sometimes only 3.  January 6th he will be turning 20 years old.  I wish I could throw him a huge party but that would be selfish of me since he loves peace and quiet and the less commotion the better.  He is having a pretty good week so far and I am grateful for that. It's really hard work though, emotionally and physically.  He has developed some new health issues that so worry me and make me feel angry.  Isn't having autism enough? Not being able to express himself or be understood?  But then I correct myself and try not to go down that path.  Being with Sam grounds me and inspired me to work hard and do the best I can.  We will address these concerns and figure out what to do about them. I will not let negative, un-hopeful  thoughts take over my mind.  Having a son like Sam has taught me to be a good researcher, patience, to be open minded and figure out a way and never give up.  Being with Sam is all inspiring and I am forever grateful to him.  Thank you for all the lovely comments and encouragement over the past year.  I know this is suppose to be my art blog but Sam is why I started to paint.
I wish you all a happy holiday and wonderful new year .
The best is yet to come!
                                                                             Catherine

What I'm working on ...

Hello Friends
Lately I have not been faithful to updating my blog.  The days seem to zoom by and it's hard to keep up with the season.  Anyway, this is my latest painting that I am hoping to be done with tomorrow.  It's 20x12 which is a new size I really like working in.  The photo is a bit blurry but the piece is coming along very nicely.  I usually do one "holidayish" painting each year.  Kind of Nutcacker,Sargent, winter theme!

Thanks for stopping by.

Martha My Dear... New painting

I enjoyed creating this piece from start to finish.  In the middle of it, my son Max came home for a visit from Maine and gave his usual thoughtful critique.  This photo is a bit dark and slightly out of focus because by the time I finished it, was too dark outside to photograph so I had to settle for an indoor shot.   I love that Beatles's song.  Every woman should have a sweet deer and lover's eye locket and walk across a rug of flowers.
Sides are painted and it's wired and ready to hang. 16x12  Thanks for looking!

Sleep Study In Venice-New Painting

Sleeping is a big issue in our home.  After almost 20 years I am still trying to figure out why Sam sleeps only 4 to 6 hours a night.  A real sleep study is pretty much impossible  given the requirements to successfully conduct one.  I have a bunch of theories of course but maybe, just maybe, Sam's school is finally onto something.   My family thinks that's why I continue to paint scenes with animals and people sleeping and couches.
Anyway, this is my new painting, "Sleep Study In Venice."  For me this is one of those special pieces that I feel really excited about.  It's 11x`14 painted on a cradled birch wood panel.  The sides are painted and it's wired and ready to hang.  This one would look great framed as well.
Thanks for looking and happy sleeping! For sale in my etsy shop:

Queen Of Everything-New Price-Framed

This is probably one of my favorite pieces.  I'd like to think of myself as the Queen of everything, at least at my house.  I'm definitely the queen of fixing things, queen of food shopping, queen of laundry, queen of the royal budget, queen of picking up after another ole queen Abbey our yellow lab.  How about you?
I have decided to make a price adjustment on this piece as I know a few out there were interested!
Here is the link to purchase:  Also this painting is beautifully framed with a gold 2 inch traditional wood frame.  Thanks for stopping by.

Full Speed Ahead-New original painting

"Full speed ahead " is inspired by many things but in particular a wedding that will be taking place in Cape Elizabeth Maine at the gorgeous home of my sister next Saturday.   Her husband is somewhat of a boxwood addict but I've heard,  has now moved on to hydrangeas (another favorite)  You can see the ocean from their copula which has an inlayed compass on the floor.  I have been wanting to include a sphinx  and decided this would be the place.  Leo had to be there and my other big cat seems to have shown up as well.  This painting is 11x14 painted on stretched canvas with acrylics.  The sides are painted and it's wired and ready to hang.
For sale here:

-More info on that type of Sphinx -

In Greek tradition, it has the haunches of a lion, the wings of a great bird, and the face of a woman. She is mythicised as treacherous and merciless. Those who cannot answer her riddle suffer a fate typical in such mythological stories, as they are killed and eaten by this ravenous monster.[1

I'm Still Here !

"You've gone a million miles
How far'd you get
To that place where you can't remember
And you can't forget......."  Bruce Springteen~Secret Garden

This was a painting I did three years ago.  Love the colors and table cloth print.

I am wrapping up a couple of commissions today.  I was displaced from my beloved studio due to a plumbing disaster a few weeks ago and boy it really got me off track.  I wasn't able to paint in my temporary place but now that I'm back w
here I belong, I'm hitting the ground running!  It feels great.

Art and Quote For Today~

~“All people dream, but not equally.
Those who dream by night in the dusty recesses of their mind, wake in the
morning to find that it was vanity. But the dreamers of the day are dangerous
people, For they dream their dreams with open eyes, And make them come
true.”  D. H. Lawrence

The Curiosity Surrounding Miss Claudette-My new Painting

This is my new piece.  I had to change her facial expression after getting too much feedback from two of my sons and Scott.  Originally she was too "bad ass."  Anyway, my beloved  camera broke and I am using a lower quality one for now but I think you get the picture.  This painting is 11x14 painted with acrylics on stretched gallery wrapped canvas.  The sides have been painted and it's wired and ready to hang.  Thanks for looking!

Commission

Yesterday I completed this commission for a family in the D.C. are.  It was an interesting piece for me to paint.  I've never done a mountain scene or hockey players or many southwestern patterns.  I enjoyed the subtle symbolism and color combinations.  Client is very happy.
I have 5 commissions lined up !   I do plan on doing some of my own paintings in between.
Thanks for looking

Sea Of Love-Auction has begun!

As I mentioned on Facebook, I have begun working on a series of commission which will keep me pretty busy for quite a while.  I do hope to sprinkle in some of my own small paintings here and there as well. I very much enjoy the whole commission process.  I love hearing about each client's story, their background and what's important to them and how I will interpret that in a painting.
I am conducting an experiment.  Many artists offer their work through auctions.  I am curious to see what would happen with this painting if I auctioned it.   I started the bid at only 100.00.  The painting was listed for 295.00 originally. Painted on birchwood cradled panel, sides are painted and it's wired and ready to hang.  9x12
After seven days the highest bidder gets the painting.
Click the link if you are interested in bidding on it. This could be fun!

The true meaning of life is to plant trees, under whose shade you do not expect to sit. ~Nelson Henderson

My son Sam has been on vacation so I haven't been in my studio except for a bit in the evening.  I've been trying to finish up a painting that is almost done but it's not happening! This is a painting I did last year, part of my Tree Of Life series.  Thanks for stopping by.
